OCR: ADL Protests Former Nazi As Head Of World Medical Group Page 87 NY 1-22/US Newswire: In a strong protest to the German Medical Assn ., the ADL has urged withdrawal of support for Dr. Hans Joachim Severing, a former Nazi, as president-elect of the World Medical Assn. Severing has been accused of sending a 14-year-old girl suffering from tb to a "killing center" in 1943. "Dr. Severing should not take office. He is an embarrassment to all that is good in German medicine," Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the ADL & Dr. Michael Franzblau, ADL national commissioner & clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco, wrote to the professional Assn. "With the recent outbreak of violence against foreigners, anti-Semitism & xenophobia in the Federal Republic, old memories of the Nazi period come to mind," Foxman & Franzblau said. "The German medical community must repudiate all vestiges of this black period in the history of German medicine," the letter continued. Severing, a leader in German medicine & one-time president of the German Medical Assn ., told The NY Times he joined the SS in 1933. He is now 76 years old & practices in the town of Dachau, site of the Nazi concentration & extermination camp. The AMA has also called upon Severing to step down, & ADL commended the AMA for its quick action in advising the World Medical Assn. it will oppose his presidency.
